    Sardinia tourism: history of Carloforte

The village of Carloforte is the only town in the entire island of San Pietro, was colonized in 1700 by fishermen from Liguria who lived on the nearby island of Tabarka. Due to continuous pirate raids, the tabarchini received permission to occupy the island of San Pietro from Carlo Emanuele III who was born in Carloforte. Years ago the economy of Carloforte was based on tuna and coral fishing, but in recent years it has become a tourist resort.

    Sardinia Tourism: Visit to Carloforte

Carloforte can be reached by ferry departing from Portovesme or Calasetta. The ban on new constructions in the Island of San Pietro has preserved nature, in fact, the periphery is mostly covered with lush, green hills, they sometimes uncover the houses and farms with strictly white facades. The comune of Carloforte unveils itself to the touris starting from the landing: the port easily leads to the city center. In the center you can find typical restaurants or eat a snack and soon discover that the dishes in Carloforte, as well as the dialect resemble those of Liguria (Focaccia di Recco, farinatada dei ceci, pesto carlofortino, vegetable cous cous and many dishes of tuna). Carloforte is full of beaches, such as La Bobba, from where you can admire the famous columns, two huge rocks sticking out of the sea. The less crowded beaches are Giunco and Girini. In several beaches, such as La Conca, you can snorkel and explore the caves around the coast.
