The Bithia settlement, currently Chia, was built between the sixth and seventh centuries BC by the Carthaginians. Some archaeological remains have been found and are preserved in Domus de Maria and in Cagliari, at the archaeological museums. Bithia was abandoned during the Middle Ages, because of numerous pirate attacks. Today, Chia is a very popular seaside resort.
Chia is extremely small, characterized by essential services for the tourist: some hotel and pretty shops. Chia is surrounded by wonderful landscape, embraced by two coastal ponds of Chia and Spartivento frequented by flamingos. The coast is characterized by beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear sea water that alternate with cliffs and preserved landscapes. The Commune of Chia extends to Cape of Spartivento, a promontory dominated by the characteristic Faro di Spartivento. From all the beaches of Chia you can see the Spanish tower of Chia, built in the seventeenth century. At sunset, the Spanish Tower is illuminated and gives tourists a picturesque view of the entire coast. Chia is full of beautiful beaches, in particular Le Dune and Su Giudeu characterized by high dunes of golden sand and clear blue sea: one of the most beautiful beaches in southern Sardinia.
