La Maddalena Archipelago consist of seven islands: La Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli. Island of La Maddalena remained uninhabited until 600, when a group of Corsican shepherds settled there laying the foundations for the construction of a town. The city of La Maddalena, officially founded in 1770, is located in the southern part of the island and has a population of 11,000 inhabitants, which increased significantly during the summer with the arrival of tourists from all over the world. La Maddalena is accessible only from the island of Palau via ferry line which passes every 15 minutes. The town of La Maddalena is small but very busy: in the center, you can find several restaurants and coffeehouses, while in the harbour you can take a nice walk. The National Park of La Maddalena, established in 1996, includes both marine and terrestrial area of the archipelago and covers approximately 18,000 hectares.
